EVENTS

ROKPA COllege Fair & COnference 2023

Rokpa conducted our very first College Conference and Fair open to the local community in partnership with Apex for Youth at the Tibetan Community Hall of NY & NJ. 100+ participants engaged in workshops about financial aid, writing the personal statement, studying for the SAT, and more! They received the unparalleled opportunity to talk to their regional admissions counselors, alumni, and current students about their college and admissions experience.

We will continue to hold events for our community that bridge gaps in resources, networks, and opportunities. Stay tuned for more!

ROKPA COLLEGE TOURS

Rokpa Scholars Program launched our new initiative: Rokpa Tours.

Rokpa Tours gave our Scholars the chance to participate in an immersive visit to select universities anytime from April 8th-16th. The hosts were trusted Rokpa Board Members and affiliates who showed the Scholars different aspects of college life as a Tibetan student, such as eating in the dining halls, staying in the dorms, visiting the libraries, joining campus traditions, and participating in our very own scavenger hunt!

ROKPA Virtual Hours

As an ongoing initiative under Rokpa, our Rokpa Office Hours space is a dedicated platform designed to provide continuous support to Tibetans navigating the college application process. Rokpa's commitment to education and personal development extends beyond a one-time event, and this initiative reflects our dedication to fostering long-term growth and empowerment.

We hope to be able to extend our reach to the Tibetan community through this initiative and help those both outside and inside our Scholars programming by opening up this space. Our Mentorship Team, consisting of experienced college students, is dedicated to help you throughout your college application journey. For most updated details on these openings, please check our Instagram, and feel free to email us if you have any other requests or questions!

ROKPA Webinars/Zoom Workshops/Panels

Rokpa scholars have access to a variety of on-demand workshops, including those listed on the right. These workshops are designed to equip our youth effectively for their educational journeys. We host a series of informational workshops and webinars with information on the college application process from essaying editing, SAT/ACT testing, financial aid to mental health! These informational sessions are held on Zoom. Students are encouraged to submit webinar topics for us to cover via email, Instagram direct message, or in our webinar exit surveys. These are open to anyone who wants to learn more!

In alignment with Rokpa's commitment to community service, these workshops are now available to the broader public through the Rokpa YouTube channel. Please check out our Youtube for the full recordings of these workshops.

If there is a particular topic or workshop you would like to see for your community, please email us. We would love to serve the needs of our community as best as we can.

ROKPA SCHOLARS

One-On-One Mentorship

In February, we release the mentee and mentor applications. We try to match mentees and mentors based on extracurricular interests, hobbies, potential academic pursuits, and university selection. For example, if a mentee applicant expresses great interest in a certain university or major, we will try our best to match them with a mentor who has experience within those fields.

We select mentors based on their ability to work with mentees, experience in applying to colleges, and eagerness to help others. Rokpa features a diverse cohort of mentors with majors ranging from economics to neuroscience. Many of our mentors are first-generation, low-income students who have themselves received major scholarships and awards such as QuestBridge and Posse.

Community of Practice: MENtors

Under our mentorship program, we are focused on fostering a sense of community among Rokpa mentors. Its primary aim is to encourage these mentors to actively engage with one another and collaborate on planning and implementing their mentorship activities. By coming together as a community of practice, Rokpa mentors can share their knowledge, experiences, and best practices, which, in turn, enhances the quality and effectiveness of the support they provide to students. It's about creating a network of support to ensure that the mentorship program is as beneficial as possible.
