Empowering Tibetan Students Across the World
Our Mission
Rokpa aims to empower the next generation of Tibetan youth. An organization committed to community service. A network of students from around the world.
Our Vision
Because of our shared history of exile, Tibetan students often do not wield the same generational advantages or systematic cultural capital as many of our peers. At Rokpa Mentorship, we seek to leverage the experiences of those who have been able to find success in higher education and use that to bridge this otherwise prohibitive gap in information, resources, and guidance. This is why we came together to constellate a network of Tibetan youth from the nation’s top universities aiming to pioneer an organization dedicated to creating greater access to education for the Tibetan community.
For the Tibetan Youth By the Tibetan Youth
Our Story
Choyang, Chosang and Dekyi came together in March of 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic–after undergoing the college application process–to create an initiative that provides much needed resources and guidance to Tibetan youth.
Coming from first-generation and low-income backgrounds themselves, Rokpa’s co-founders understand that Tibetan students are often disadvantaged when it comes to the college admissions process. Their own parents were unfamiliar with it, and this is a stark contrast from many American families, who have had generational access to networks and opportunities.
For months, the co-founders Zoomed and brainstormed until the launch of Rokpa Mentorship in July 2020. It is the first-ever initiative that pairs Tibetan college students with high school seniors as a guide for their college application process.
